Listening for TRUTH
I was sitting with a good friend - Reiki Master Heather Lynn. We were having lunch and realized
SOMEONE should be recording our conversation! It was fun, funny and fabulous –
but most of all the two of us together created some wonderful insights that we
thought could really impact others.
Our inaugural podcast was meant to be an introduction – but
it revealed a wonderful epiphany for me. I am a healer. I never thought of
myself that way. I am compassionate, of high integrity, a great friend, a loyal
supporter, a great listener. I can make a friend out of thin air! But a
healer??
We explored that all of these things are the ingredients for
a special kind of healing that can take place – healing that happens…when you
feel REALLY HEARD…when you speak your TRUTH…when you can expel old toxic stuff
out into the universe and release it from yourself.
Now I’m no therapist and I am not drawn in any way to that
profession. But each of us carries stress, dreams, desires, love, pain that go
unexpressed because so many people go through life hearing but not really
listening.
I wrote a blog recently for a national group – MA WebCenters
– and it was all about listening skills that lead to better sales results. In
it I talked about using these tips to listen more powerfully and presently:
Give the person speaking your FULL attention - Our brains can process 400 words a minute. An average speaking time is 120 words per minute. What are you doing with all that extra brain power?
That means NO EXTERNAL distractions - Do I need to tell you not to text and talk? ;-)
Let them finish a thought before you respond - Hopefully they take a breath between thoughts!
Allow them the glory of their story - No need to one-up them with your own awesomeness ... there's enough to go around.
Empathize - Can you see things from their perspective? Put yourself in their shoes?
Ask permission to help - Sometimes we just need someone to listen and don't need a problem solver. Ask first before offering your advice. Then it will be sure to be received.
